The Importance of a Security License

Today we will be having a look at one of the most important (and yet overlooked) aspects of choosing a security system.

Did you know that in Australia, anyone who provides security services of any kind is required to have a valid license from their state's authority? It seems like such an oversight since there are so many companies offering these types of services and yet many have no legal right to do so. The truth is that anyone that provides security services (alarms, CCTV, Intercoms, access control etc) MUST have a valid security license issued by the applicable state authority (Vic Police in Victoria). If they do not have this license, they are ineligible to perform security works, it is that simple. So how does this affect you as the user/purchaser of the system?

Let’s start by asking a question – would you pay someone you don’t know to install lighting in your business – with no electrical qualifications? Or how about getting the local handyman to add that much needed extra room to the house? Of course you wouldn’t…..so why would you do the same with something as important as the security of your business?

As a business owner, you know that security is important. You want to make sure that your employees and customers are safe, and that your property is well-protected. That’s why it's important to only work with a security integrator that has a valid security license. Here's why.

What is a Security License?

A security license allows a company or individual to provide security services. This includes advising and installation, supply and services of:

  • Security Camera or audio systems
  • Security audio or visual recording systems
  • Security alarms and alarm monitoring systems
  • Safes and vaults
  • Security detectors (movement, infra-red, contact, microwave)
  • Electric, electro-mechanical, magnetic or biometric access control

In order to get a security license, a company must meet certain requirements set forth by the state in which they operate. This ensures that only qualified companies are providing security services. These requirements vary from state to state, but they generally include things like:

  • Having a certain amount of liability insurance
  • Employees having passed background checks
  • Completion of industry training in installation and management of security products
  • Membership to relevant industry associations

Who needs a Security License?

Any company that is:

  • Acting as an adviser regarding security systems
  • Installing Security Equipment
  • Supplying Security Equipment
  • Reselling any of the above services

On top of this all staff employed by these professionals also need private individuals registration with the state authority so you know they are trained and knowledgeable. Character and police checks are also required as part of the individual registration so you know anyone working on your system is of good character.

Why Does it Matter?

It is important that any professional you hire has invested in their training and knowledge. They should be able to provide the right tools for your business needs while also being well supported by an organization with stable employees who can handle any situation without fail! When you hire a licensed security provider, it's assurance that they have invested in this training and knowledge to provide the best possible system for your business.

Working with an unlicensed security integrator can be risky for a number of reasons. First of all, there's no guarantee that the company is qualified to provide the services they claim to offer. Most people would be shocked to know how many unqualified providers are installing sub-standard CCTV and alarm systems. Security is a complex and specific technology that requires a high level of skill and experience to get right. It’s not just screwing a camera to a wall and hooking up a recorder.

Without a valid license, there's no way to know if the company has passed a background check or met the financial requirements necessary to operate in your state. This license ensures that the company is legitimate and that its employees are properly trained. It should go without saying that if someone provides security for you, you want to be sure that they are reputable, ethical and above all thoroughly vetted through background checks.

Additionally, unlicensed security integrators tend not to operate by the same rules and regulations as licensed companies. This means they don't adhere to industry standards or best practices. As a result, you could end up with subpar service or even put your business at risk if something goes wrong.

On the other hand, working with a licensed security integrator provides peace of mind knowing that you're working with a qualified, reputable company. Licensed companies are held to high standards and must follow best practices in order to maintain their license. This gives you the assurance that you're getting the best possible service for your business.

How Can I Check?

The best way to check if your security integrator has a valid security license is to contact your state's licensing board and ask for verification. They will be able to tell you if the company is licensed and in good standing.

When it comes to finding a security integrator for your business, make sure you only work with companies that have a valid security license. Doing so will ensure that you're working with a reputable, qualified company that is held to high standards of quality and customer service. Don't take chances with your business—insist on working with a licensed security integrator.
