Trusted by the OC, Valued by the Police: How Quality Security Became a Community Asset Expand

Background

Brave Security was recently engaged to upgrade the security infrastructure at a large commercial strata property in metropolitan Melbourne. The building had outdated CCTV with limited coverage and poor image quality, along with a fragmented access control system that offered little operational value to tenants or security staff.

Our team designed and delivered a comprehensive solution, including a high-definition CCTV system paired with a professional-grade Video Management System (VMS), as well as a fully integrated access control system.

The Solution

The newly installed CCTV system featured:

  • Better positioned and high quality surveillance cameras covering all key areas including entrances, loading docks, car parks, and public corridors.
  • Advanced Video Management Software, allowing building management to easily search and export footage, set up user permissions, and securely store evidence.
  • Smart analytics features, including motion detection and timeline-based search, to streamline investigations.

Access control was upgraded to a system that allows for secure fob entry, real-time activity logs, and centralised management—enhancing both security and convenience.

Unexpected but Welcome Outcome

A few months after commissioning the systems, the Chair of the Owners Corporation reached out to us directly—not with a complaint, but with praise. He shared that local police have been consistently contacting them for access to CCTV footage captured by the new system.

The chair noted:

“The police keep coming to us now—not because of problems with the building, but because the system is so clear and easy to use. They know we have the footage they need. It’s honestly become a community asset.”

Thanks to the crystal-clear camera quality and easy export features of the VMS, footage could be provided quickly and efficiently, helping law enforcement identify suspects and resolve investigations faster.

Impact

  • Improved community safety: The CCTV system is now being relied on by authorities to assist with external incidents captured on the property.
  • Greater value for the OC: The building’s investment in quality security is providing returns well beyond internal building use.
  • Professionalism recognised: Brave Security is now seen not just as a provider, but a partner in public safety.

Lessons & Takeaways

  • Not all CCTV systems are created equal. Image quality, ease of use, and long-term reliability are critical when designing systems for real-world use.
  • A user-friendly VMS empowers non-technical users to provide assistance when it matters most whether to the OC or to external parties such as police.
  • Good security infrastructure benefits more than just the building. It can become a tool for improving safety across the neighbourhood.

Conclusion

This case proves that when you invest in quality, the benefits reach far beyond what’s on the quote. Brave Security’s high-grade CCTV and access control systems don’t just protect properties—they contribute to safer communities.

The Cost of Choosing on Price Alone – A Real Intercom Installation Story Expand

Background

Brave Security was invited to quote for a full intercom system upgrade at a residential building managed by a professional building management company. After assessing the site and its needs, our team recommended an Aiphone system—known for its reliability, advanced feature set, and long-term durability. Our quote reflected the inclusion of this premium, feature-rich system and our commitment to a professional, standards-compliant installation with ongoing support.

The Decision

Unfortunately, our proposal was not selected. The building management team advised that the decision was made primarily on cost, with the job awarded to a competitor who had quoted a significantly lower price. However, their quote was based on an entirely different, lower-spec system—Urmit—which offered fewer features and did not meet the same reliability or support standards. The difference in pricing was not a reflection of like-for-like equipment or service.

What Happened Next

A few months after the installation was completed by the competitor, we received an unexpected call from the building manager. Multiple tenants were reporting that their new intercom handsets were literally falling off the walls. We were asked to attend site and investigate.

Upon inspection, our team discovered that the intercom monitors inside the apartments had been affixed using double-sided adhesive tape, rather than being properly mounted with screws and fixings. This shortcut in installation led to the devices detaching from the walls—posing both a safety risk and a significant inconvenience to residents. Additionally, no provision had been made for support or ongoing service by the original installer.

Our Response

We recommended to approach the installer and request a professional installation with screws to the wall under warranty. We could have done the work but would have charged for it and the installer clearly did not do the right thing by this Owners Corporation.

Key Lessons

This experience highlights the importance of comparing security and intercom proposals not just on price, but on:

  • Quality of Equipment: Not all systems provide the same value or outcome.
  • Installation Standards: The integrity of a security system lies not just in the hardware, but in how it’s installed.
  • Certified Installers: Proper licensing, manufacturer certification, and adherence to standards should be non-negotiable.
  • After-Sales Support: What happens when something goes wrong? A reputable provider offers responsive service—especially critical for security and access control.

Conclusion

Choosing a quote based on the lowest price may seem like a cost-saving measure—but it can result in higher costs down the line, especially when failures, repairs, or full system replacements are needed. When it comes to your building’s security and communication systems, investing in quality from the beginning is the smarter and safer choice.

Same-Day Fob Replacement – Because Security Doesn’t Sleep Expand

Background

In the early hours of a weekend morning, a resident from one of Brave Security’s serviced buildings contacted our emergency line at 5:00am. He had lost both his physical keys and access fob and was unable to enter the building. The situation required immediate action to prevent unauthorised access and restore secure entry to the resident as soon as possible.

The Challenge

Lost access credentials pose an immediate security risk — not only for the resident, but for the entire building. With traditional processes, replacing an access fob might take a few days, especially over the weekend. But waiting wasn’t an option.

Our Response

  • Immediate Deactivation: As soon as we received the call, our team acted fast. The lost fob was disabled from the system immediately to eliminate any security risks in case it was found by someone else.
  • Verification Protocol: We reached out to the unit owner straight away and verified the tenant’s identity to ensure the request was legitimate.
  • Same-Day Courier Delivery: Once verification was complete, we programmed a new fob and organised an urgent courier. The replacement fob was hand-delivered to the resident on the sameday – all while most of Melbourne was still waking up.

The Outcomes

The resident was safely back inside the building with a new fob in hand within hours. More importantly, the risk of unauthorised access was neutralised immediately. The Owners Corporation was informed of the incident and reassured that the building’s access control system was never compromised.

Why It Matters

This case shows what makes Brave Security different:

  • 24/7 Responsiveness
  • Proactive risk mitigation
  • Fast turnaround, even on weekends
  • Commitment to both resident convenience and building-wide security

Security doesn’t keep office hours — and neither do we. When it matters most, Brave Security is already on it.

The Key He Didn’t Know He Lost—Found and Returned. Thanks to a Smart Access Control System Expand

Background

A modern access control system isn’t just about letting people in—it’s also about maintaining a clear and accurate record of who holds what credentials. Brave Security recently completed the installation of a new access control system at a residential building, and our team had taken extra care to ensure that every issued fob was linked to a verified resident in a properly documented database.

That diligence soon paid off.

The Situation

Our office received a call from a passerby who had found a single key with a Brave Security tag attached, lying on the floor near one of the buildings we manage. They weren’t sure which building it belonged to—but they knew enough to contact us.

The Response

We asked the caller to provide either the fob number or a clear photo of the fob’s backside. With that information in hand, our team quickly searched our credential records. Starting with the closest building to where the key was found, we were able to identify the owner within minutes.

The Twist

When we contacted the resident, he was genuinely surprised—not because he had lost his keys, but because he didn’t even realise they were missing. Thanks to the honesty of the person who found the key and the traceability built into our system, the key was returned before it could even be reported missing.

The Brave Security Difference

  • Each fob is uniquely assigned and documented in a secure database.
  • Fast identification of lost credentials.
  • Ability to respond to real-life events, even when the resident isn’t yet aware of the problem.
  • A reputation for reliability and responsiveness that encourages the public to reach out when they find tagged items.

Conclusion

It’s easy to overlook the value of careful system setup—until it saves the day. This resident didn’t even know he’d lost a key, but because of a well-programmed system and a clear tracking process, it found its way back to him quickly and securely.

Because the best security anticipates the unexpected.

Investigating and Resolving a Misallocated FOB at a Residential Building Expand

At Brave Security, we pride ourselves on diligent access control management and ensuring the highest level of integrity when it comes to resident security. A recent case highlighted exactly why these processes matter.

Background

A resident contacted our office requesting the reactivation of a FOB he claimed had always worked but had suddenly stopped functioning. Rather than simply reactivating the FOB, our team undertook a thorough investigation – a step that sets Brave Security apart.

The Challenge

Upon review, we discovered that the FOB was not originally allocated to the requesting resident’s unit. Instead, it was registered to a different unit and had previously been reported as stolen.

Our Response

We immediately contacted the rightful owner to investigate further. It was revealed that a tradesperson, after completing a washing machine repair at the rightful owner’s flat, had mistakenly placed the FOB into the wrong letterbox – specifically, into the letterbox directly below. The resident who found it (Owner 1) chose not to report it but instead attempted to claim it as his own and later approached us to have it reactivated and reassigned to his lift access level.

Thanks to Brave Security’s strict verification procedures and integrity-first approach, we declined to reactivate the FOB and advised that it be returned to the rightful owner.

The outcome

  • The rightful owner regained control of their missing FOB.
  • The security and trust in the building’s access control system were preserved.
  • A potential security breach was proactively prevented.

This case reinforces why Brave Security’s systematic and responsible management of access control is crucial for the protection of all residents. Our commitment to doing things properly ensures that residents can trust the systems we install and manage.

Intercom Code Removal – When Security Matters Most Expand

Background

The Owners Corporation manager felt increasingly frustrated and concerned after spending months asking their previous security provider to remove a security code from the building’s intercom system. That code had become a serious vulnerability, as it was known by a local criminal.

They felt that their concerns weren’t being taken seriously—and that their residents were being left exposed.

The Challenge

They felt that their concerns weren’t being taken seriously—and that their residents were being left exposed.

Our Response

They reached out to Brave Security, and we immediately understood how urgent the situation was. We’ve helped others in similar situations where response times and technical limitations from other providers left buildings at risk.

What they found was that with Brave Security, things get done. We were on-site the same day and had the code removed within one hour of the request—leaving the building secure and the OC manager relieved and grateful.

How a Sophisticated CCTV System Changed Resident Behaviour—And the Air—In a 50-Storey Melbourne High-Rise Expand

Background

In the heart of Melbourne's CBD stands a towering residential building—50 storeys high with approximately 500 apartments. Despite its premium location and impressive scale, the building faced a recurring and costly issue: the rubbish chute was frequently clogged, and the chute rooms became dumping grounds for oversized items.

When Brave Security first attended the site to quote for a new CCTV system, the building stunk. Quite literally. There was a persistent rubbish smell that lingered throughout the hallways—evidence of years of misuse, poor waste management, and ineffective deterrents.

The Owners' Corporation was spending thousands of dollars regularly to unclog the system and clean up misuse—an unsustainable situation that frustrated both residents and management.

The Challenge

The primary issues were:

  • Frequent chute blockages due to inappropriate items being forced down.
  • Residents dumping furniture, appliances, and bulk waste into chute rooms.
  • Inability to identify offenders, leading to zero accountability.
  • Escalating maintenance costs and growing tension among residents.

With no effective deterrent in place, the behaviour continued unchecked—until Brave Security was engaged to find a solution.

The Brave Security Solution

Brave Security designed and installed a tailored CCTV surveillance system with the goal of introducing visibility, accountability, and ultimately, behavioural change.

System Overview

  • One CCTV camera installed in every rubbish chute room across all 50 levels.
  • Two additional cameras per floor strategically placed in the hallways to monitor traffic to and from the chute rooms.
  • Footage from all cameras is fed into a centralised server system, allowing for seamless and fast retrieval of video data.
  • The system is fully compliant with privacy regulations and was installed with minimal disruption to residents.

The Results

Within the first few weeks of operation, the new system enabled the Owners' Corporation to:

  • Identify and issue over 200 breach notices to residents who had improperly used the chute or dumped oversized items inappropriately.
  • Provide concrete evidence with time-stamped footage clearly showing the responsible party.
  • Establish a culture of accountability and awareness throughout the building.

Just one month after installation, not only had the improper disposal of rubbish ceased, but the entire building smelled different—the unpleasant odour that once lingered was completely gone. The CCTV system had done more than change behaviour—it transformed the environment.

Conclusion

By partnering with Brave Security, this high-rise Owners' Corporation eliminated a persistent, expensive problem that had plagued them for years. The investment in surveillance paid for itself quickly—saving thousands in cleaning and maintenance, while creating a safer, cleaner, and more respectful living environment for all residents.

When Accountability Matters, We Deliver the Vision.

How a Lost Set of Keys Was Reunited With Its Owner—Thanks to One Tiny Detail Expand

Background

Security isn’t just about preventing incidents—it’s about accountability, traceability, and responsiveness. A recent real-life incident demonstrated how Brave Security’s approach to system design and credential tracking goes above and beyond the expected.

The Situation

Our office received an unexpected call from the local Victoria Police. A bundle of keys had been handed in—containing various apartment building keys and fobs. What caught the officer’s attention was the small Brave Security tag attached to the keyring with Brave Security's office number.

Thanks to that one detail, the officer reached out to Brave Security in the hope we could help identify the owner.

What Happened Next

Our admin team took that fob number and, using our well-structured credential databases, was able to trace the exact user of the fob within minutes. The keys belonged to a resident in a building where we manage the access control system.

We immediately reached out to the resident to deliver the good news: her keys had been found and were safely with the police.

The Resident’s Reaction

The resident was ecstatic and relieved. She had assumed the keys were gone for good and was already preparing to:

  • Re-key multiple door locks.
  • Replace access fobs and remotes.
  • Absorb significant inconvenience and cost.

Instead, thanks to our efficient system and the traceability of the fob, her keys were safely returned within a matter of hours—no lock changes, no stress.

The Brave Security Difference

This story illustrates the kind of outcomes our clients can expect when working with Brave Security:

  • Every fob and credential issued is uniquely tracked and linked to its user.
  • Lost keys can be quickly traced back to their rightful owner (without breaching privacy).
  • We work hand-in-hand with authorities to support positive community outcomes.

Conclusion

This wasn’t just about returning a set of keys—it was about how a small but smart system detail saved a resident time, money, and worry. It’s proof that good security isn’t just about keeping things out—it’s also about getting things back.

CCTV Issues discovered during Expert Security Takeover Expand

Background

An 18-storey residential building had a CCTV system previously installed by Expert Security. While functional, the system had some critical flaws — in particular, it was programmed to only record on motion. To save money in buying a larger Hard Drive, they installed a smaller Hard Drive but only set the recorder to record on motion.  This is something we strongly advise against.

When the building’s Owners’ Corporation employed Brave Security to add 4 cameras to their existing system, Brave noticed the recorder had previously been set to only record on motion. This is a common mistake to provide longer recorded time, IE: more History. Cameras only recording on motion often fail to capture all events as often the subject’s movement is too subtle or occurs too far away from the camera to actually trigger the recorder to start recording.

The Incident

One morning, the Chair of the Owners’ Corporation, Mark, was left shaken and distressed after someone had forcefully broke the building during the night.  Damaging the auto entry door and breaking the glass Mail Room Door.

The Problem

Mark then went to the CCTV recorder but couldn’t see enough to make it worthwhile pursuing. Mark was searching on motion as that’s how it was previously set up, and he had done many times before, the recording had stopped mid-incident. The motion-only setting, had failed to capture the full sequence of events—leaving Mark without enough evidence required to support a police report and hold the person accountable.

Brave Security Saved The Day:

Lucky for Mark, 3 days earlier, Brave Security had installed 4 extra cameras, and in the process, noticed the recorder was only recording on motion and changed it, to record 24/ 7 and motion.

When Mark reached out to Brave the following day after the break-in we advised him that we had changed the recorder to record 24/7 and motion, we then taught him how to change his search criteria to search for 24/7.

He hadn’t realised that the footage was still being recorded in the background—he had simply been searching for motion events only.

Brave walked Mark through how to retrieve the continuous footage, and sure enough—there it was: clear, uninterrupted video showing the intruder, the residents who were his friends, and the entire sequence of the break-in.

The Result

  1. Thanks to the upgraded settings and guidance from Brave Security, Mark recovered the critical footage he needed to identify the apartment responsible and was able to persuade the culprit to pay for the damage.
  1. The situation also highlighted a second vulnerability: the building’s access control system lacked the intelligence to trace resident activity.
How We Stopped Unauthorised Access to an Apartment Building in Less Than 24 Hours Expand

Background

Late on a Thursday night, an apartment building managed by an Owners Corporation faced a serious breach: a thief broke into the building’s key safe, stealing an access fob and a master key. This event exposed the entire building to the risk of unauthorized entry—a major security threat for residents.

Brave Security had previously quoted an access control upgrade for the building. Upon receiving the green light early Friday morning, we moved swiftly into action.

The Challenge

With compromised credentials and no immediate way to revoke access, the building was left vulnerable. The existing system was outdated, non-compliant, and unable to disable access instantly or automatically release doors in the event of a fire—a significant risk to both safety and liability.

The brief was clear

  • Fast-track the installation of a modern, compliant access control system.
  • Replace all access credentials.
  • Minimise disruption to residents.
  • Ensure the building is fully secure before Monday night.

Our Response

Brave Security mobilised immediately. By Friday afternoon, our team had coordinated the sourcing of materials, scheduled technicians, and prepared resident communication for the OC to email out over the weekend.

At 7:00am Monday, our field team arrived onsite and began the full system installation. With military precision and clear coordination, the team:

  • Installed the new access control system
  • Distributed new fobs and remotes to nearly all residents (including additional pre-ordered credentials)
  • Uploaded all access permissions and data into the system
  • Ensured all building entry points were fully re-secured

Despite the high stakes, the rollout was seamless—residents were largely unaware of the urgency behind the scenes.

By 5:00pm Monday, the new access control system was activated.

The Result

The building was secured with zero downtime and minimal disruption. All but two residents received their new credentials, and the final two were promptly followed up. The new system not only restored security but also delivered vital compliance by integrating fire release capabilities and offering full control over access permissions moving forward.

Key Outcomes:

  • Threat neutralised within 24 hours of receiving approval.
  • System upgraded to a compliant and secure solution.
  • Resident access credentials re-issued seamlessly.
  • Access restored with peace of mind for residents and committee members alike.

Client Feedback

The OC Committee was extremely impressed with the speed, professionalism, and coordination shown by Brave Security. The risk was addressed before it could escalate, and the building is  now equipped with a modern, scalable access  control system that offers long-term peace of mind.
