What is a credential?
With regards to access control, a credential is something that when presented to a reader, grants access.
A credential may take the form of;
- Something you have: ie - a fob, a mobile phone, remote or swipe card.
- Something you know: ie - a code. OR,
- Something you are: ie - face, iris (eye), fingerprint recognition, etc. (Biometrics)
WHAT CREDENTIAL IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
Types of credentials that you may consider for your site may include the following:
- Low-security fob/card formats - These are usually very old formats, low-frequency formats commonly 125 MHz. They cannot be encrypted and are very easily copied.
- High-frequency formats - Typically 13.56 MHz On its own, is still in the low-security bracket, and easy to copy, however, we can encrypt high-frequency formats making them almost impossible to copy, placing them in the high-security bracket. MyKi card is an example of high-level security.
- Mobile readers - Mobile or Bluetooth readers are immediately in the high-security bracket. Basically, your smartphone is programmed to be a fob. Some advantages of mobile credentials are the read range, we can program the read range of the reader from a few cm to a few meters. Making it great to open the driveway gate when you drive up to it. We can also program the reader to be proximity or twist & go. (You need to hold your phone vertically then twist it 90 degrees)
Please note: We can get readers to do multi formats, so a site can operate with multiple formats at the same time.
HID estimate by the year 2023, 85% of all credentials sold worldwide will be mobile credentials.
- Face Recognition - This technology is improving. We estimate it may soon be a viable option for building access.
- Fingerprint - This is not a technology we recommend. Older people have soft skin and have trouble using it.
- Coils inside things like remotes - These are basically a fob without the plastic body. We can provide coils to insert into your car remote so it now serves 2 purposes and means you won’t leave the remote in your car to tempt thieves as you will need it to make the lift work.
Please note that some remotes with coils are not working correctly if the reader is mounted on steel (e.g. lift wall)
Garage Door Remotes - We recommend Wiegand remotes as we can program & delete them through the cloud server. They then show up in the history of use in the access control system to identify users. Older-style plastic remotes are easily copied and do not integrate with most access systems. (You can make them open the gate but not programmed within the access control system)

CONSIDERING AN ACCESS CONTROL SYSTEM?
Are you looking to upgrade an existing one or install a new access control system? In this blog, we have a look at 3 aspects of access control that can maximise your return on investment and ensure you have an effective system for years to come.
IMPORTANT ACCESS CONTROL CONSIDERATIONS

Internet Access
Internet access enables you to see images from your CCTV on your phone or PC. We can offer immediate issuing and deleting of fobs when your access control is connected to our cloud server via an internet connection. Many O.C.’s doesn’t have their own internet. We can supply and install our 4G modem which has two external aerials for good reception and a 4G sim card.

Cloud Server
Our cloud server, set up through our secure VPN, allows all future credential programming to be completed quickly and cheaply. It also allows us to perform remote service to identify problems without costly service calls. To add to your joy – we add 2 years warranty to your entire system if you have a cloud service!

Warranties – Up to 5 Years
Our standard warranty is extended by 2 years if you have a maintenance contract to look after your asset and a further 2 years if your system is set up and connected to our cloud server with 24/7 monitoring.
